Undergraduate Program

Advice for Prospective Grad Students

To apply to the graduate program for Fall

Who should apply

Our program is aimed at students interested in pursuing advanced studies in microbial genetics and genomics. Undergraduate coursework in bacteriology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics is strongly recommended. Students with a strong interest in microbial genomics, but whose undergraduate backgrounds are weak in these areas should still apply as long as they are willing to make up deficiencies. However, basic courses in general biology, mathematics (through calculus), physics, and chemistry (through organic) are required.

How

There are a limited number of positions in the training program. To get an idea of whether your application would be competitive for admission into the program, you can preapply. We hope to eventually have a web-based preapplication system, but for now, the simplest thing to do is to send us an email telling us about yourself - your background, the science courses you've taken and how you did in them, and any previous research experience you've had (even if it isn't related at all to microbial genetics). Until this page says otherwise, you can send your information to Lily Bartoszek (lily@mail.bio.tamu.edu). Mailing address: Room 314E, BSBE, Biology Dept., 3258 TAMU, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-3258.

If you contact us early enough, we can also answer questions and give you advise about courses you are thinking of taking or that we think would help you with our program. Often this kind of advice will help you with getting into grad school in other programs; while we'd like to recruit you to our program, we're happy to advise you on general questions.

If we decide that you should apply, we will pay your application fee and arrange for you to take an expenses-paid trip to College Station for an interview and to see how the program works and the kinds of opportunities we have here at Texas A&M.

This program is funded through a grant from the Life Sciences Task Force at Texas A&M.
