As one of the largest research universities in the nation (9th in the country in total research expenditures in 1998), Texas A&M has exceptional facilities for research. In addition to the facilities found in individual faculty labs, there are a large number of centers offering research services or access to cutting edge technologies on campus. The breadth of research methods used on our campus, and the friendly and collegial atmosphere at TAMU make intramural collaborative research easy to set up. The hardest part is keeping track of everything that is available.
The Gene Technologies Laboratory (GTL) performs DNA sequencing and DNA synthesis. Equipment in the GTL includes two ABI automated DNA sequencers. Automated DNA sequencing is also available from two other campus centers, the Laboratory for Crop Genome Analysis (LGCA) in the Crop Biotechnology Center and the DNA Technologies Lab in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology
Facilities for transcriptional profiling using gene arrays are available in the Biology Dept. and through the Crop Biotechnology Center.
The EM Center is a centralized research and teaching facility which provides light, electron, and scanning probe microscopy research services for both life and physical scientists. Imaging is also available through the Biological Imaging Laboratory in the Biology Dept.
Flow Cytometry is available in several facilities on campus.
The Protein Chemistry Laboratory (PCL) operates as a fee-for-service facility for Protein Sequencing, Amino Acid Analysis, Protein fragmentation and Electrophoresis. The PCL also provides consultation on protein purification and workshops on methods in protein biochemistry.
The Laboratory
for Biological Mass Spectrometry (LBMS) was established to
provide modern
analytical mass spectrometry methods to researchers in the life
sciences. The LBMS performs state-of-the-art mass spectrometry
that can routinely perform accurate molecular weight determinations
(0.1 - 0.001%), characterization of primary structure at the femtomole
and picomole levels, and in some cases, detailed studies of higher
order structures.
TAMU also has first-rate facilities for Structural Biology. The Center for Structural Biology and the Laboratory for Biological NMR provide collaborations for structural genomics.
The Institute for Scientific Computation is an interdisciplinary research center devoted to the applications of digital computing in mathematics, engineering and applied science.
