Microbiology and Genomics Links

A sampling of some of the Internet resources for Microbiology and Microbial Genomics.

Please send suggestions for additions and link fixes to Jim Hu.

General Microbiology

  • The Microbial World is a introductory educational website hosted at the Univ. of Edinburgh covering bacteria, fungi, viruses, biological control, environmental microbiology, and disease of plants, humans and animals.
  • American Society for Microbiology
  • Microbes.info - The Microbiology Information Portal.

General Genomics

The American Academy of Microbiology's Critical Issues Colloquia Program has released a report "Microbial Genomes:blueprints for life" that. describes how "Genomic science has the power to revolutionize microbiology and improve life on this planet, but it will require important decisions and strategic actions in various arenas. "

  • NCBI - National Center for Biotechnology Information. Lots of useful resources for genomics - not just microbial.
  • Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) catalogs current knowledge of molecular and cellular biology as connected to genome sequences. I especially like how KEGG allows comparisons of the biochemical pathways in different species.
  • List of microbial genome sequences completed or in progress (compiled at TIGR)
  • Genomic comparsion of membrane transport systems. At UCSD. A cool site despite the annoying "love your transporters" textcrawl at the bottom.
  • Bacteria

    • List of prokaryotic genome sites at the MRC. Part of their GenomeWeb site.

    E. coli

  • E. coli genome center at the University of Wisconsin
  • E. coli genetic stock center at Yale
  • Encyclopedia of E. coli genes and metabolism. Requires a login account
  • Kenn Rudd's EcoGene Web Site at the Univ. of Florida
  • Salmonella spp.

    • Salmonella.org offers all the news that's fit to print about Salmonella, including genomics, genetics and links to strain collections.

    B. subtilis

  • SubtiList at the Pasteur Institute
  • Cyanobacteria

  • Cyanosite has a collection of resources for research in cyanobacteria
  • Mycobacteria

  • TubercuList at the Pasteur Institute
  • Fungi

  • The Munich Information center for Protein Sequences (MIPS) has information on S. cerevisiae and N. crassa, among other organisms
  • Fungal Genetics Stock Center, Department of Microbiology, University of Kansas Medical Center has resources for many filamentous fungi, including Neurospora and Aspergillus.
  • cDNA and cosmid sequencing information for Neurospora and Aspergillus is available from the Genome Center at the University of Oklahoma.
  • Aspergillus

  • Aspergillus-Genomics.org is a consortium of universities and companies working on Aspergillus genomics. This site has links to information, but appears to be an incomplete implementation (e.g. menu items that don't have working links).
  • Neurospora crassa

  • The Neurospora Genome Project at the University of New Mexico focuses on cDNA clones from N. crassa.
  • Saccharomyces cerevisiae

  • Proteome Inc (Home of YPD, the yeast proteome database)
  • Stanford University hosts the Yeast Genome Database which has a long list of links to other yeast resources. Stanford is also the home of Pat Brown's lab, where information on his approach to DNA microarrays can be found.
  • The University of Washington has a Yeast Resource Center. In addition, the Fields lab home page has links to their analysis of global protein-protein interactions.
  • Genome Centers and Companies

A comprehensive list of genome centers is at the MRC. A few of the ones we think of when we think of genome centers are listed below:

  • TIGR
  • Celera
  • Sanger Centre
  • Baylor College of Medicine
  • Univ. of Oklahoma
  • Univ. of Washington
  • Washington University-St. Louis
  • The Whitehead Institute

  • This program is funded through a grant from the Life Sciences Task Force at Texas A&M. Admission to Texas A&M University and any of its sponsored programs is open to qualified individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, or educationally unrelated handicaps. Texas A&M University is an equal opportunity/ affirmative action employer. Last modified: July 31 2004 20:07 PM
